Muscat is a highly aromatic grape variety used to produce a wide range of wine styles, from dry and sparkling to richly sweet dessert wines. Known for its intensely floral and fruity aromas, Muscat wines typically feature notes of orange blossom, honeysuckle, peach, apricot, and grape—often described as tasting just like fresh grapes, which is rare in winemaking. It is one of the oldest cultivated grape varieties, grown in many regions under names like Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Moscato (in Italy), and Moscatel (in Spain and Portugal).
Muscat wines can range from light and fizzy Moscato d’Asti to complex fortified versions like Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise from France or Australian Rutherglen Muscat, known for its deep, raisiny richness. Generally low in alcohol and often sweet, Muscat wines are appreciated for their approachability, vibrant aromatics, and versatility as aperitifs or dessert pairings.
